Jeannie Ferrari taught Language at Humanities Preparatory Academy for 10 years before transitioning to Principal in 2012. She has her B.A. from University of Michigan and her M.A. from Columbia University, Teachers College. Principal Ferrari has worked hard to create a warm, caring and inclusive culture where all students are known and cherished. She believes that students learn best through authentic inquiry and discovery.

Chin-a has been teaching at Prep for over a decade. Before joining the team, she studied at the University of Delaware, CUNY Baccalaureate Program and Columbia's Teacher's College where she received her Masters in Social Studies' Education 9-12. Before she entered the field of teaching, she worked in the music industry and for an elected official in Brooklyn, NY. She is the Sustainability Coordinator at HPA and has spoken in front of the NYC City Council on behalf of climate change education. She is an avid cook and hopes to compete on Master Chef one day.

Cara Barnes has worked in education for 8 years. For the past five years, she has taught both English Literature and Social Studies in New York City's Public Schools. Prior to teaching in New York, she taught English in Japan for three years through the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. As an educator, Cara, truly believes in the words of Bell Hooks (educator and social activist), “when everyone in the classroom, teacher and students, recognizes that they are responsible for creating a learning community together, learning is at its most meaningful and useful.” In her courses, Cara places emphasis on analyzing literary works that not only nurtures her students’ reading, writing, and communication skills, but their connection with the world at large.

This is Gabriella’s 11th year at Prep. She teaches mathematics and AP Computer Science Principles. Prior to becoming an educator, she worked as an art director for advertising agencies and governmental institutions both in New York City and Italy, her native country. Gabriella holds an M.A. in Economics and Business from the University of Rome, Italy, and M.A. in Math Education 7-12 from Adelphi University. She believes in inquiry based learning: by investigating, questioning and analyzing problems, students discover why and how mathematics works and make sense of the world around them. Gabriella has presented her original coursework and led workshops at various national mathematics conferences. She is a Peer Collaborative Teacher whose role is to support educators in the school.

Barry Komitor is the Music Artist in Residence at Humanities Prep trough the non-profit Art for Progress. Mr. Komitor studied art at Middlebury College in Vermont, and classical and jazz bass, voice and jazz guitar with trumpeter and arranger Ray Brown at Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA. Komitor is a rock and blues vocalist and plays guitar, bass, drums, and piano. He is dedicated to helping students find and learn to make the music that they love. His specialty is teaching the inner workings of music so that students gain cumulative knowledge.
