Here are some frequently asked questions that have come up from parents and students:
What is remote learning and when will it begin? Fortunately, all students have access to Schoology, our remote learning system. Starting this Monday, March 23rd at 9:00 a.m., students will be expected to log in to Schoology from their computer. Classes will meet on Schoology during their normally scheduled times Monday-Friday from 9:00 am-3:25 pm. For example, if a student has English with Dorian during A block, the student would log in to Schoology and go to Dorian's class page at 9:00 am Tuesday-Friday. Schoology has a video conference feature that teachers will be using to check in with students, tutor and teachStarting Monday, March 23rd, teachers will show students how to use these features. It will not be perfect. There will be bumps on the road. We will work with you to address any issues that come up.
Central DOE iPads Distribution These new iPads with T-Mobile Service (50k devices handed out per week) are basically first come, first serve for all those who qualify. So get your students to fill this out. You can also fill it out on your student’s behalf. Even if your students have devices from your school, they still qualify for devices. These come with a cellular data plan. https://coronavirus.schools.nyc/RemoteLearningDevices. Click or tap if you trust this link." https://coronavirus.schools.nyc/RemoteLearningDevices
What about advisory? You will still have advisory! Your advisor will videoconference with the advisory. They will send instructions directly to students through Schoology.
What about counseling? Jenny and Jamali are available to meet with students who get mandated counseling (IEP) on video conference. Students should email Jenny and Jamali if they have counseling concerns. If you get mandated counseling, Jenny and Jamali will reach out to you about the schedule and how to access tele-counseling services.
What if my child has an IEP? Our teachers are still meeting and co-planning for ICT classes. Therefore, 2 teachers are still available in the remote ICT classes to support students. Also, teachers are working to honor your child's IEP modifications in this new format. Speech and counseling services will also continue. If you have questions or concerns, please email Maureen: maureen@humanitiesprep.org, Keludys: keludys@humanitiesprep.org (espanol) Ally: alexandra@humanitiesprep.org, or Patrick: patrick@humanitiesprep.org
What if my family is experiencing economic hardship? If you and your partner have lost your jobs or other essential work due to this crisis, feel free to contact a Humanities Prep staff member (contact info above). We will connect you with the appropriate social services. A list of food banks can be found on below this letter.
What if I or someone I live with gets Coronavirus? If this happens, we are here to offer counseling, support and community. We are also here to problem solve with you. We encourage you to reach out to a trusted staff member. Humanities Prep is a family that takes care of each other.
Is graduation or prom cancelled? No! Everything is set to continue as planned. In the unlikely event that online learning continues past the April 20th deadline and goes into May or June, then these activities would be postponed, not cancelled.
What about PBATS and AP classes? Your PBAT teacher will be working with you on Schoology and Google Docs. They will support you to develop your PBAT. The College Board is giving us a lot of flexibility with AP classes. They will continue and AP teachers will inform their students what to expect. Please reach out with any other questions or concerns that emerge in the coming days and weeks. We are in this together!
Best,
Principal Jeannie Ferrari
